Why Bra Tax Should be Scrapped

Those of us with bigger boobs know just how uncomfortable it can be not having the right support. Neck pain, aching shoulders and backaches are just some of the problems we can experience. Not only that, but having bigger boobs can affect our confidence, as well our propensity to exercise and participate in sport, which can affect our long-term health.

Currently, bras are subject to VAT at the standard rate, with only women that have undergone qualifying surgery being exempt from the 20% tax.

In April 2024, The Society of Radiographers called for VAT to be scrapped from all bras, arguing that like sanitary products, bras are a basic necessity and that the tax disproportionately affects women and could be considered discriminatory under the Equality Act.

We hear from women every day how life-changing a good-quality, well-fitting can be for both physical and emotional health. That’s why we have been sharing our support for the campaign. You can listen to our CEO, Leanne Cahill, discuss the issue on Tonight with Andrew Marr.
